Must go into CT or up the East Shore line, as I cannot imagine these cross over down in NJ or so and then go up the west shore! Not often do you see a freight on the line I would think.
You're likely correct re this photo... But... I used to live on Steinway Street and Astoria Blvd - there was an overpass for this line about 10 houses from where I was in the same street. Every now and again, at about 3-5am you would feel and then hear the tremble of the heaviest train there was. It was slow. It looked and felt heavy. It made the building shake ever so slightly. That had to be a frieght.

Thanks for the info. I don't know why she was at the GD/EB plant back then. They don't normally work on surface ships at that plant and she wasn't mentioned while we were there.
It's my understanding that the ship was used as a mobile work platform/accommodation ship for the yard workers during sea trials

Thanks. That's interesting. Despite having been to the plant many times, I wasn't aware that they chartered vessels to serve as home base for their sea trials. I would have thought that they'd borrow something from Bath Iron Works to serve that purpose.

I believe the yard bought the ship from the owners (the Government of Canada) when it was decommissioned. The Government usually dispose of assets like this at auction. Usually at a price less than a long term lease from another shipyard.

But GD already owns Bath Iron Works, so I figured it would just be an internal lease or transfer of an existing asset owned by BIW. Of course, that would potentially prevent the sale of the asset, so... Depending on the overall corporate structure there could be some tax advantages to the internal lease. Anyway, thanks for the info.

When I was posted in Vancouver we had a signals version of that machine. Couldn't see out the passenger (LEFT) side of the beast so it took two of us to drive it in traffic. Easiest oil level check of any vehicle I've ever seen; it was right beside the driver's seat. The pedal arrangement required concentration: Clutch of the Left, Throttle in the middle, Brake on the right. Very easy to parallel park, too.
