Bombardier CRJ-900 inbound at Charlotte Douglas International earlier today, SMC Takumar 105mm f2.8 on a Fujifilm X-T20 body. Is that white dot just forward of the wing from some kind of laser tracking device? Is that ok with TSA? I see these things are getting widely available, but I would think the authorities would frown on them. Anyway, it wasn't me.

Somebody's new whip. Call it what you will, land yacht, boat, whale, sled - the "Florida Edition" Mercury Grand Marquis is an imposing vehicle. Built on the Ford Panther platform (along with the Crown Vic), these were the last of the mega-cars. They have a reputation for being indestructible. Luxury cars in their day, they now provide cheap transportation for single parents with large broods. You can buy one of these hulking beasts for five to six thousand dollars.

Old American luxury cars are a great choice for car buyers on a budget. Old school comfort without much tech to fail, they were mostly bought by elderly folks who took good care of them, and put in very few miles.

The funny thing about those Panther-platform cars is, thanks to the truck-like body-on-frame construction and extra long trunk and hood, they're surprisingly cramped on the inside. A previous-generation Nissan Versa sedan has the same rear-seat legroom as a Grand Marquis, despite being three feet shorter overall, and weighing nearly half as much.

They were not the last, though. Chrysler continues the tradition of massive body-on-frame, V8 dinosaurs with the 300 and Dodge Charger. They're even heavier than the Panther cars. The sad thing is that they are nearly the only cars made by the traditionally American "big three" car makers. All of the more sensible cars have been discontinued: 200 / Dart, Taurus, Fusion, Focus, Impala, Malibu, Cruze... all gone. Crossovers are much more profitable.

Edit: the 300 and Charger are unibody. They're just so darn heavy I assumed they were body-on-frame! Their platform is based on the W210 Mercedes E-class, from the late '90's, a relic of Daimler's brief ownership of the company.

Former Quebec, North Shore & Labrador EMD locomotive #301 was sold the the Wellsboro & Corning RR in NY & PA. The Buffalo & Pittsburgh RR now operates that line and traded other power for 301, Show here near Homer City, PA on 01.20.21 leading a loaded coal train.
