1067 was one of 10 SD70ACes Norfolk Southern had painted in "Heritage" schemes to honor its predecessor railroads, in this case the Reading. On a cloudy winter day in filthy paint, the engine looks like it never left the gritty hills of northeastern Pennsylvania coal country. But most NS engines are roamers, and I caught this one in Winston-Salem, NC. The longest lens I had on me was my SMC Takumar 55mm, so this picture is heavily cropped. I think the resulting grain actually adds to it, in this case. If you squint, this could be the last days of the Reading in 1976, on Kodachrome.

Pentax dynamic range cannot be beaten! There was nearly a seven stop difference between the shadows and late afternoon sun illuminated parts of this scene. I exposed for the highlights and extracted the the shadows in post, though the differing color balances in this scene caused me fits. K-70 w Sigma 17-50/2.8 DC EX ISO 1600 1/500 @ f 10, 21mm

You could always try bracketing with a fast enough shutter speed for a moving subject. Just my ¢¢.

I pre metered and took some test shots, knowing the locomotives are black with white graphics means I had to choose an exposure which did not blow the highlights. -1 stop exposure comp worked just fine. The biggest issue, especially using Photoshop Elements 12 , was the huge difference in color temperature between the shadows, and the sun. My KP does better in these situations than the K-70, and MUCH better than my K-3.
