unfortunately, in addition to the haze in the crater, it was extremely dry and the lake you refer to was almost completely dried up - 85 % or more

we saw no flamingos at all or any sign of life on it very saline even when full no animals were drawn to it.

however since we weren't targeting birds it wasn't a disappointment

[ the birds we did run across were fantastic tho ]

I did take a lot of lenses but several were hauled for specific anticipated circumstances [ some of which did not appear ] and if I adn't hauled the PLM, I would have missed the 150 - 450 even more

you know you have a good guide when the other guides tell you so. John has been doing it for 30 plus years and we asked for him by name, based on the fact he had guided others we had known. We had him in 2016 and we again asked for him for this trip.

the photos are being posted here and there on the forums but you can also check the albums being created on flickr.com

this one will eventually have them in chronological order -

and there will be smaller albums as well

Magnificent photos. I love the two hippos facing each other down. Thank you for taking the time to offer this great overview of the safari. If I were not so close to my 80s, I would be tempted to go on safari again.

. . . other aspects of your preparation for the great adventure. . . .

if anyone want to know more or anything I haven't discussed, please send me a pm or otherwise let me know

on our second trip, we acted entirely different, the first one we took photos of every thing we saw, despite the fact that you will get plenty of opportunity to photograph
the more " common " animals you find throughout the trip. this time we tried targeting the more rare animals and experiences - Rhinos and Painted Dogs, Leopards and Cheetahs, other rarer animals, greater Kudu, red hartebeests, topis, rarely seen small animals, etc. carnivores hunting, kills, feeding etc, etc, etc,

plan early and be wiling to adjust the plan as you learn more

make sure your paperwork, pass ports, visas and medical requirements: physicals, vaccinations etc are taken care of as early as possible

unless you are used to setting up such trips, consider using a professional to help. we did and we will refer you to her if you send me a pm.

research where you want to go and what you want to see -

not all areas of the continent of Africa offer the same opportunity

nor do different areas of a single country.

We had to go to the Selous Game Reserve in south east Tanzania to have a chance to see African Painted Dogs and in that area many of the animals we saw in north were not present.

if flying a long period of time, consider a stop to recover, we fly from the US to Amsterdam, spend a night, then on to Tanzania and do the same on the trip home

use your resources, I have only been twice but others here have been to Africa numerous times and we have at least one contributing member who lives in South Africa

practice with your equipment

have fun above all, put the camera down and just look once in a while

bring treats if possible to share with your guide.

Great, valuable advice. I knew Tanzania very well, having lived there for several months on two different consulting mission, plus I had plenty of in-country government counterparts. That allowed me to do all my own planning, including several wonderful stays at Ma Gibbs Farm hostel up aways on Mt Killy Back in those days, you could hire driver and Land Rover for only $100/day, and Ma Gibbs was only about $75 per night. I think it has been taken over by tour companies nowadays, so you cannot go there without booking a tour. The government motel/hotels back then were usable though clearly not up to private operator standards.

one last comment

we always made our guides aware that we knew this fact:

the best guides in the world, regardless of where you are being guided, can only put you in the right place

whether you are successful in finding what you want

that is dependent on the wildlife

so if you are not successful

do not blame the guide
