PP Challenge #14 - Flower at shallow DOF

Welcome to PP Challenge #14. The image for this weeks challenge is that of a flower taken with a K100D + Pentax-F 50mm f/1.7 lens. This image was taken with a shallow DOF. It also seems to be a little over exposed and definitely needs some improvement. I look forward to seeing what can be done with the shot. Be creative!

Thanks again to Tim for setting up the generic Mediafire Account

RAW (PEF) file link (9.6 MB): Flower - PEF

Full size JPEG (1.6 MB): Flower - jpg

The Challenge will close for entries in 1 week - i.e. 9:00 pm (Pacific Time) on the 12th of January.

This is the image straight from the K100D using Pentax-F 50mm f/1.7, no PP, only resized.

OK, my turn:
Levels, curves, selective colouring, layered texture, layered fauna picture from archives and smart sharpen...

I think both have excellent qualities. Ash was very creative, adding elements to the shot and using texture to cover his footprints, as well as objectionable bokeh.

Yours does an excellent job of highlighting what's right about the original image - a more straightforward and still excellent approach in my novice opinion. I didn't have time to play with this last night, I'll give it a shot tonight.

Here's my shot at it. Adjusted and converted to JPG in Rawtherapee then some additional cropping, histogram, coloring and sharpening in PSP.

I did not see much in this photo to work with, but all the prior entries are proving me wrong.
Anyway, with my not-so-keen eye missing the possibilities as a photo, I went wild working off the small jpg and making it not-a-photo:

Night Study

"Night Study"

Cropped, sharpened, cloned out some white bokeh, illumination effect (single light source in PSP), pasted in moon then used a masked gaussian blur to feather into the lens bokeh.

Downloaded the JPEG image and worked on that. I was distracted by the bright curve to the right of the flower and wanted to emphasize the flower while also adding color. I really just let myself go on this and can't be absolutely sure if I recorded all the steps!

Used GraphicConverter to...

1. Duplicate image to make second copy same size
2. Curves, saturation, contrast image#1
3. Gaussian blur, saturation, contrast#2
4. Copied #2 and made third image same size
5. Vertical flip of image #3
6. Played with blur in #3 to soften edges
7. Combined #2 and #3 thru' Multiply operation
8. Combined #1 and resulting image from step 7, using Multiply operation
9. Curves, contrast, saturation to finish
