Also "venerable." It looks as though the upper stone guardrails were added sometime after the basic arch bridge was built.

I remember watching a short program that demonstrated how that boat-lifting "bridge" functioned. Ingenious engineering.

Last Sunday I walked the 1/2 mile to where one of the two bridges on I-40 which cross over my road are being torn out and rebuilt! Supposedly, they will build a “temporary” bridge, then build the permanent bridge, then tear down the temporary one. This is because the interstate can’t be shut down and there is no way to divert traffic around the construction!

On this bridge, half has been torn out and all traffic is on one side only!

Wow, a two-year project. Luckily for me I usually take the Waynesville exit on the several trips a year I make to western NC.

spent quite alot of time on this, including 2 hours in 15 degree temps. Multiple cameras and only one really yielded useable results. The one that did, for some reason many of the frames don't quite line up (like the image was stretched just enough to be noticeable.) Two hous of fixing in Photoshop. Hope this is deemed worthy.

Good idea! Over the holidays the traffic would be backed up for 4-7 miles because of the lane reduction! And my work commute is now 38.5 miles each way instead of 28.5 miles! But we’ll have some shiny new bridges when it’s all done!!

Yes! Very worthy! I like the lighting and the bluish inside lighting especially! Nice photo! I hope you dressed warmly!
