The old harbor and the bridge

It was not that many years ago I used to drive my car over this bridge when it still crossed the Grand River. Finally the old bridge was replaced after it was deemed unfit for the traffic volume. A huge debate started over how to replace one the last iron truss bridges left in over the Grand River. Many people were fond of the old bridge and it was considered a landmark. However the amount of traffic at this crossing simply had outgrown the barely one lane bridge and it had to go. The march of progress. Luckily one of the six sections was saved and transported to Riverside Park along the Grand River to be installed. There it sat for over a decade sadly rotting away. Many began to feel it would simply be scrapped out. However enough money was finally raised to have it installed in the park. A large sum of this came from one private donation. For those us who can remember driving over the bridge it is nice to be able to come here and walk over it. There is still one steel truss bridge left here over the river. That bridge is now on the National Register Of Historic Places and very heavily protected. It is at a location that receives very little traffic.
