In our area they are often Saxon in origin so similarly date from earliest Christian times in England.

El Santuario de Chimayó, a Roman Catholic church in Chimayó, NM. (Santuario is Spanish for "sanctuary".) This shrine, a National Historic Landmark, is a contemporary pilgrimage site. It receives almost 300,000 visitors per year and has been called the most important Catholic pilgrimage center in the United States. The original church was built in 1810 and expanded to its current configuration in 1816.

There is one at St Mary’s Cogges. The church dates to the Norman era. Land granted by William I. Website is not about how old the building is.

St. Peter's, built to impress, and it does. Almost too big. Who can even see, much less understand and interpret what is in each gilded rectangle on the ceiling?

Brunelleschi's Dome, Florence Cathedral. Look closely to see the tourists on the viewing balcony atop the dome, a good way to get a sense of how big it is.

My second trip to St.Peter, I study a lot beforehand. It was even more impress but also a kind of creepy walking in there knowing many bad thing happen in and around that area.

In stunning contrast to the simple mission church above, a well-decorated church on Malta. The elaborate stonework on the floor are burials

One of the basic, sturdy, trim, inviting little churches seen all over Iceland. Many are much smaller, hardly more than family chapels.
