Twelve 19th century chapels? By Google Earth, Llanelli doesn't look big enough to have that many.
btw what do you Poms, er, Welshmen, call the structure over the gate. It obviously isn't a gatehouse, although as big as some, nor a mere arch or arbour.

I'm a Pom who lives in Wales - it's a lychgate (lych gate, lichgate, lich gate)

As for the chapels - there was a big revival in Wales around that time, and there are ex-chapels all over the place - take a tour on street view some day, and you'll see

PS - the church tower, in this instance, is 13th Century, but the lychgate (and you might want to look up the etymology) is early 20th C - to commemorate the rebuilding of much of the body of the church.

Thanks Graham.
I do recall the term lychgate now that you mention it.
And yes, the Welsh revival was big!

beautiful church building
I did not pay to que up with the hordes to enter, but I understand it's quite elaborate inside. And I don't think photos were allowed to be taken.

St. James, Dunwich

Dunwich has a fascinating history. At its peak in the 13th C it was similar in size to London at that time with eight more comparable churches. Strong storms swept away almost all the buildings and subsequent coastal erosion has meant the loss of about four miles of land.

Not a traditional church; chapel in the "separate prison" (where the really troublesome convicts were kept) at Port Arthur Penal Settlement, Tasmania
