Apse of the Basilica of St. George, Prague. Some of the fragmentary painting on the ceiling and walls may date from the 12th or 13th century.

Theatine Church, Munich. Long ago I posted other images of this building. I have wondered if the stark white interior of some churches in Germany are a consequence of WWII

My guess would be the Reformation as the stronger drive. Post WWII restoration usually tried to preserve what was left of the past.

This is the largest and oldest-standing church in Ottawa. Construction began in 1841, and the church became a cathedral in 1847, eight years prior to the formal creation of the city of Ottawa.
Here are two views from the National Gallery of Canada on a grey and drizzly evening.

- Craig
IN the late 70s my company got the contract to replace those windows. My bench buddy Vlad ZUger from Croatia was elated. He had started his woodworking career as a wagon wheel maker in Croatia. The arched windows that looked so intimidating to the rest of us absolutely made him sing. So he was kind of like the master and I was the apprentice, although I probably had my journeyman's papers by then. So the windows were as close to hand made as you'll see these days, band sawed then cleaned up with spoke shaves, then small portable sanders. They would be one of the high lights of my six years as a cabinet maker.

Zuger was in Gatineau park one day when the Trudeau family walked by. Pierre came over to him Justin and his siblings in tow and said hello, where are you from Zuger, in his heavy Croatian accent (which I still mimic to this day) told him he was from Croatia. Pierre addressed him briefly in Croatian/ Zuger was mightily impressed. The PT said, "what do you do?" Zuger said, I'm a cabinet maker, PT said "Me too."

My dad advised Trudeau from time to time, Zuger, and during a walk around in Brampton, PT patted Tess' head and save it a little squeeze (she ws 9 or 10). So, I've known 3 people with personal contact with our current Prime Minster's father.

Truth is somewhere between. The church is 17th century and has always been Catholic, not Lutheran. It was built in Italian Baroque style and the interior stucco work is apparently original, allowing that some restoration may have been done.

Interesting. Wonder if that was an effect of the Counter Reformation, about which I know very little.

That was my guess as well. Maybe research it.

Very substantial building for a place with so few houses. Interesting history to explain that.

Also attests to the cost of labor and the power of religion at that time. The English country church in a style called English Perpendicular, built of stone in almost every case I've seen draws forth several adjectives: solid, local, quaint, cozy, comforting.
