Two churches: Berlin Cathedral (on a very gloomy day) and St. Patrick's Cathedral, the latter taken from the top of the RCA building about 1971 and therefore a SCAN

I got a new Olympus OM-D E-M10 Mark II the other day. I took it with me when I went out to walk my dogs today. This is a little church near our house where we walk each day.

I like the contrast in the last two images. The one with the idea that a church should be glorious to reflect the glory of the heavens, the other almost starkly plain with the idea that worshiping is more important than the place where it's done. If course, I shouldn't be cynical and say the money available may also influence architectural decisions.

Chapel of the Good Shepherd, New Zealand. There's a small clear-glass picture window behind the altar, facing out across countryside and sea. I cannot recall any other church with such a feature - stained glass windows behind the altar are common, but not a window that allows worshipers to see outside beyond the confines of the building.

This small church building at Wybalenna on Flinders Island is a renovation of the mid 19th century building associated with one of the most tragic events in the hundreds of tragic events in the history of colonisation of Australia. More information here

Walt, there is a church at Paynesville on the Gippsland Lakes in Victoria where the pulpit is in the shape of the bow of a boat and picture windows behind it looking out over the lakes. It is a long time since I saw it but you probably had to be standing to see the lakes beyond the preacher. Probably very distracting when there were power boats on the lake - particularly when there were races!!

EDIT
Well, it is not quite as I remember it (maybe 50 years ago!)

St Peter's by the Lake Anglican Church

Well, that's two churches with such a window. How do you suppose that calculates as a percentage of all churches in New Zealand and Australia?

BTW: Here's the view from the pews of the Church of the Good Shepherd. It is potentially as inspiring and humbling as any stained glass, except the parishioners see the view every day so it may be less special. Sorry if the image looks over-processed. No HDR and the original was badly washed-out.

Oratory of Gallarus, about 10th or 11th century. The first image is looking back toward the doorless entry (doubtful there was ever a door). The second image, taken with a fish-eye lens, shows the entry door at the right and the single window in the opposite wall at the left. This image gives a sense of the tiny space within the building. No historic records exist as to how this building was used. Two theories other than it being a chapel used by Irish monks for communal worship:1) it was a private family tomb; 2) it was built to provide shelter for travelers.
