PP Challenge #16 - Up in the Air

Welcome to PP Challenge #16. What do you do if you're a photographer and you get the window seat on an airplane? Take pictures of course! But, at least on a commericial jet flight, you have to put up with a lot of limitations - scratched / fogged windows, glare, LOTS of scattered blue light, limited ability to frame, etc.

So the challenge this time is to put your PP skills to work and overcome the limitations above. Photorealistic or other, make this an image to be proud of.

Thanks to Tim for setting up the generic Mediafire Account

The full size images are below:

Full size JPEG (2.96 MB): Window vista JPG

RAW (DNG) file link (6.24 MB): Window vista DNG

Here's a small jpg straight from LR sans any adjustments:

The challenge will run at least through Jan. 31st. I hope to see lots of fine entries by then.

Please respect my copyright and keep the EXIF intact for any and all copies and derivatives you make for this challenge.
I grant the PP Challenge participants unlimited personal, non-commercial use of this image and any derivatives.

Have fun.

One Shot HDR Approach

I decided to run this through my lightroom one shot HDR preset. I followed with the smooth compressor process in Dynamic Photo HDR. Final touches (curves and contrast) were adjusted in Paint.net.

Slight changes in the raw file with curves, temp, and tint. B&W with red filter in channel mixer, cloned the airplane window frame out. Some painting and a fresco filter.

This should set the bar low for everyone

White Dragon

mithrander - great entry - I had not even thought to try any sort of HDR manipulation. I like the high contrast result.

ramseybuckeye - very creative. I like that the colors hide the image in itself... if that makes sense ...

Here's my humble entry.

I went with a tight crop on the cliff face and the "dragon" I envisioned atop it. I used a very light fade correction with a warm tint to kill the heavy overtone from the window, add contrast and saturate all at once. I then used an HSL layer to massage the saturation levels of each color until the dragon was emphasized. I then ran noise reduction, and sharpened it up at the same time.

An entry from me before my journey away (not that I'd be available to host the next one)...

SWEngineer, a good project. You other folks have done a great job, and I almost didn't try working on this. But as a geologist, I just love the landforms here, and had to give it a go. I chose to emphasize the landforms by going to black-and-white after cropping out the wing, tweaking curves and contrast. Here t'is:

Sure thing Rob - the spare moments away from family will still be used wisely.
Thanks.

Tried a few filters on this one, sharpening, reduction of the blue channel, increased contrast.

Most of the entries seemed to deal with the wing by cropping it out, so I thought I'd clone in the ground that was underneath the wing in addition to adjusting for levels and some tonal corrections.

Sunset

I went with warm tones, like it was sunset.

SWEng I think I might have lost file info when I tried working with layers. I am new to this whole thing and I could not get the download to work.

And I went with jheu02 and did some cloning.
