Originally posted by WPRESTO An explanation for the penguin sign I posted on the previous page. The Town of Manly, upriver from Sydney, is home to the last mainland population of the smallest modern penguin species. Estimated remaining population = 35. And there is a remote chance one or more might come ashore here.
BTW: The pigeon is hoping to be mistaken for a penguin, to get some protection.
There's Little Penguins in Manly? That's amazing for them to survive in Sydney! There's still some
Little Penguins on the mainland, although I suppose it depends on how you define "mainland". Most are on small islands just offshore and Tasmania. Possibly it's the last mainland colony in NSW. There's a
colony in Victoria where Maremmas are used to protect the birds from predators.
I've not seen them in NSW. I have seen them at Philip Island and in Tasmania. This is in Stanley in Tasmania. We were able to find Little Penguins which had come ashore after dark, but only a couple. I believe that they are more easily seen in summer.
