It's the favored term in much of New England. I first heard it from M, but all her family (many aunts, uncles, cousins, etc) all called such sandwiches "grinders.." I cannot ever remember having one when I was a kid, but I vaguely remember the terms "hero" and "hoagie" used for such a sandwich. I did not hear the term "subway" until that company became commonplace.

Well, hero is NYC... Hoagie is usually in the Philly area.

I never heard Grinder honestly, but my connection with NE starts and ends in Western MA.

Well, there's "hero" and then there's "gyro" In Texas and here in Calif, we just call them "subs", although I've heard "hoagie" in the midwest.

"gyro"
Gyro is the meat in the rotary machine... usually lamb, usually sold in Greek spots or in pizzerias (yep).

Hero is pronounced as it reads, like a "superhero"... Now Gyro... there's debate in that. "Yee-rro" is how the Greeks do (I lived in Astoria NY for 15 years, very Greek community)... rather that the "guy-roh" that would come to mind from an American standard.

I miss living in Queens... the food, gezz, the food!!!
