I'd definitely recommend it. It's close to a full day trip, as the Island is pretty far out from Key West. Aside from exploring the many photo-ops of the fort , there's good bird watching both for marine species and song birds which are moderately abundant in the central parade ground of the fort where some some large trees now grow.
