Manchineel tree, very nasty (scan from a chrome, this image probably posted five or more years ago). Rain water dripping from the leaves can cause rash and blister if it gets on you skin. Sap will damage car paint. The fruit is supposed to be sweet-tasting but the consequences of eating are extremely unpleasant. Below is extracted from the Wkipedia account:

The fruit is possibly fatal if eaten; however, "fatalities from ingestion are not reported in the modern literature"[9] and "ingestion may produce severe gastroenteritis with bleeding, shock, bacterial superinfection, and the potential for airway compromise due to edema. Patients with a history of ingestion and either oropharyngeal burns or gastrointestinal symptoms should be evaluated for admission into hospital. Care is supportive."

With his propensity for destruction, why hasn’t man eradicated this natural menace?

The tree is and has been for a very long time harvested throughout the Caribbean for lumber, I presume with significant precautions (info from Wikipedia)

Commonly the people who complain most about tourists are other tourists. For many locals at tourist hot-spots, more tourists = more business.
In years past, I have served on or worked for people working on local and regional tourism councils. Sometimes local citizenry needs to be educated about how much tourism contributes to their local economy. Also, people working at filling stations, restaurants, stores --really anywhere a visitor might stop-- are part of the local "tourism industry" and might need to be reminded that if they act like ambassadors for their community....rather than let's say buttheads....it can help pay off overtime by increasing tourism. This is especially important in areas that are not well-known tourism hot spots, but which do have tourism.

Time for a few more doggie license plates. A few people run boxers in agility.

Posted a different version of this sign on the "Alphabet Race" thread. The lodge is over an hours' drive from the nearest RR station along a near-single-lane, summer-use-only dirt & gravel road. It is truly the end of the line. No roads from this point out in any direction except back the way you came in. It's 440 miles in a straight line west to Nome - no roads, no trails. Do it in winter with a dog sled. (scan)
