If I was forced to make a choice, I'd risk a croc on land before a hippo. A basking croc will stay put unless you get very close and even then may not be bothered. A hippo may come charging before you see it, and they can run distressingly fast.

Indeed. Besides, hippos can venture quite a way away from the water. In St Lucia they do walk in the streets at night, even onto the premises of the lodge we stayed in. They left ample proof before going back to the river
