Walt, you escaped just in time to avoid one of our worst fire seasons. (Definitely not the worst, but one of them.)
I'm pretty safe here, but only about 50kms from the closest one; the smoke has been pretty constant - bad for those with asthma and other respiratory problems.
We might end up with our 19th inquiry into bushfires since 1939 - I wonder if this one will make any difference.
Perhaps we should just re-read the previous 18.

At times I've thought we put a curse on places we visit. Shortly after visiting a Hollywood-built 19th century western town, one that had been used for scores and scores of movies and TV westerns. it burned to the ground. Within a two years after we attended a show at a coliseum in Hartford, CT, the roof collapsed under the weight of heavy snow closing it for years during reconstruction (it was empty at the time of collapse). Within a year or two of visiting an art museum near Boston thieves broke in and took several of their most valuable and famous paintings, including a priceless Rembrandt. A year after we visited Canaima in Venezuela, the stepping-off point to see Angel Falls, a spot that can only be reached by airplane (no roads into Canaima), a plane similar to ours taking German tourists out caught fire and crashed killing all aboard. I cannot recall at the moment, but I know similar disasters have befallen another places within a year or so of our visit. My son & his wife may carry our curse, as they visited Notre Dame de Paris just a short time ago.
