That spot is at a bottom of hill. Before they put the posts in off-road cyclists would come flying through that gap and run into any walkers, cars, horses or other cyclists just coming around the corner. Now the dummer ones just wipe themselves out in the chicane.
There is a "mountain" nearby, Mt. Holyoke, a bit over 900ft (>280m) AMSL, so there's easily 700 ft down from summit to the surrounding ground. A road goes to the very top (there's an old mountain top hotel there) and inevitably the road has multiple hair-pin curves, one that also has one of the steepest slopes. Now and then a bicyclist thinks they can go top to bottom without using their brakes, some kind of prove-something, bragging-rights stunt. They always earn a Darwin Award - somewhere off in the trees.

Wow, I've never seen or heard the word "chicane"--had to look it up. Now I understand "chicanery" Thanks!
For some reason, you Brits sure know the English language! Now, about "dummer"...
Next you'll be saying Brits invented English!

And I'm really very grateful. I especially appreciate their refusal to assign gender to inanimate objects!

I'd say this sign is all Greek to me, but it's Latin.
