I think this is a Broadbanded Water Snake. Abbey Nature Preserve, Topsail, N.C. (possibly a water moccasin)

Lots of 'nice' images here.
I have had reason to dispatch a snake or two from around my house, and am never too happy to have to do it.
Shivers-down-spine territory.

Even the most venomous snakes in Australia are protected - but then so am I, I hope)

This one has a reptile AND a mammal in it, but it is mostly about fascination of reptiles.
My little lizard-hunter is actually very good at capturing them unharmed - she would never grab for the tail - and no lizards were harmed in the making of this photo.

Southern black racer, harmless I am told. Which is nice, because it was right outside the door of our hotel room.
