Foxtail Palm flowers and new shoots. While I was photographing these an older couple stopped to look with me on the elevated walkway that allowed me to get this close view, and told me there used to be a black market for the seeds, which went for as much as $5 each. Curious I looked into it a bit further when I got home. These distinctive palms, native to, and isolated on, a remnant patch of rainforest on a headland called Cape Melville just north of Cooktown in Queensland, and are the only species in their genus. They were relatively unknown until the late 70s when they were shown to a botanist by a local aboriginal. When landscapers became aware of their potential they became very fashionable, and collectors nearly decimated the then existing population. Today you can see them everywhere through the suburbs and city here. They're not clearly shown in the first photo, but there are bunches of the larger seeds in the background.
