Why not a more common 77mm orange filter, stepper ring and an inexpensive 77mm rubber lens hood?
You work with what you've got, and in this instance using a gel on the flash was the best option.

I see. I had the impression you were looking to purchase an orange filter and couldn't find one readily available. Over the years I have collected a lot of colored filters in various diameters for my BW film gear. With film, there is a price to pay for slapping on a orange or red filter (2 and 3 stops loss of film speed) when typically 400 ISO is about the fastest I load. But I imagine bumping up base ISO 2 or 3 stops is not a big deal for your camera when using a colored filter. I used a yellow filter in that Radio Telescope and Schoolyard shots.

My problem is that a lot of the monochrome work I have done over the years typically involved Rangefinders, and the lenses for RF cameras typically never have filter threads that went beyond 62mm*. I have done some experiments with knocking out the glass in an STC mirror box mounted filter and replacing it with filter glass from a Nikkor O56 filter that had a damaged frame. That works quite well for wide angles but due to flare issues it is ill advised to use these mirror box mounted filters with telephoto lenses.

*and even that is pretty uncommon. The Leica Noctilux 50mm f/0.95 has a filter thread of 60mm which is quite possibly the most infuriatingly uncommon filter diameter in history.
