I'm definitely gravitating toward the longer FL's than I would have thought--though our air quality is such here in the the Eastern US that we're seldom lucky enough to encounter a scene with comparable depth of detail. (I think I could pair up a DA* 50-135 with a macro prime and be pretty much set for my adventures afield, though.)

Longer focal lengths do need more open space, certainly. At home I prefer something wider for landscapes. But for the wide open plains of Africa I find wide lenses will often give you a whole lot of emptiness and not much of interest.

Here's another at 55mm. I cropped away a bit of "dramatic" clouds at the top to avoid them drawing too much attention.

And one at 170mm - although there isn't much happening in the background on this one either

Savoche-- Again, awesome shots...the capture of the wildebeests, especially, has the same prelapsarian vibe as "Mona Pools" (at least for an American, for whom such plenitude resides a century or more in the past.) The naturalist Aldo Leopold once wrote of a now-forgotten Midwestern landscape, "What a thousand acres of Silphiums looked like when they tickled the bellies of the buffalo is a question never again to be answered, and perhaps not even asked," but your series happily does, even if the answer is a melancholy one.

Really great photo.

Thanks for the kind words. Sadly, you're right. The number of places one can experience "untouched" nature is dwindling. One might say we are contributing to the destruction of these places by going there. On the other hand, I believe the only hope we have for keeping a few landscapes where the herds can roam is actually to go there. That way it will make economic sense to keep the wilderness wild, at least to some degree.

Ok, back on topic! Another African landscape.

Ha, definitely a long history of romanticizing Africa (one man's Eden being another's tsetse belt) but these are great images, nonetheless.

I love the bark on these silver maple trees, the snow I could do without by this time of year.
