Have you tried DarkTable ?

I'm running Mint 16 and yes, I have darktable installed. I just have not spent enough time with it yet to get a feel for it. I'm comfortable with digiKam, which I use in conjunction with Gimp for image editing.

Here's my first black&white photo using my new K-50 and A50/1.7



I rarely do B&W photos. This one though... I feel like making it black and white would look much better then full colour, especially when colours on the posters are faded already. What do you think?

Yes, I think b/w works well for both of your photos. I'll use b/w if the scene or subject is already somewhat monochromatic, or if I want to emphasize texture or shadows.

Yeah. The steel frame photo... I converted it into BW in post-processing. Basically, I muted the blue in sky and made the green in leaves really black.
