Promotional photo.

This is a promotional photo for Tara Bassett and Puppy Pack Adventures and related web activities. This also was my first day with a DA* 300mm f4 lens. I photoshopped out an out of focus trash can and some other distraction that I can’t recall. Tara likes PPA photos cropped square or to fit the Facebook cover page format.

Cool shot!

Not your fault but I wanted to comment since your brought it up - While cropping square, for me, is very difficult, in this shot it works with the triangle formed by the subjects (square crop for me needs a different geometric figure within it to make it work). A shot like this on 16:9 for example might work better, to have the illusion that the pack is headed somewhere. In the end, it is what the client wants though.

I agree about square crops, it goes against my background of making prints. I’ve casually looked for square picture frames and the only ones I’ve seen are for 3x3 or 4x4 prints.

But I have no social media presence on my own so I don’t understand the reasons for her formatting preferences. She tells me that the 16:9 format does not fit the Facebook cover page template. I have a similar shot to the one posted where the pack was more spread out but she chose this one. And she actually posted this shot on Facebook cropped to fit a circular frame.

I’ve come to realize that 99% of the stuff I shoot for her will only be viewed on a cell phone and only until she updates her home page. Thus the photos usually have to be simple and dramatic.

PS: I’ve been reviewing some of my square cropped shots and reeditting them for myself. (I think I better go back to work now.)

I like the BW treatment you did for this portrait. Very clean, metallic. Print would look nice on a silver frame.
