Thank you! Yes, the white background really kills b&w images in particular. I have changed to the "dark" theme, makes most images look much better

It's a single shot cropped to X-Pan format (65x24).
Thanks. I’d never considered changing the background for that reason. I’ll give it a try.

Dda iawn, looks good!
My only take-it-or-leave-it suggestion (and I truly mean that - no offence taken if you tell me to stick it up my...) might be to try at a higher ISO and bump up that shutter speed. If you're particularly steady-handed you can certainly manage 1/10s at 55mm handheld, but bumping the ISO to 400 in this case, having the shutter speed at 1/20s would make it easier to avoid any motion blur.
It doesn't detract from the image in this case, but it generally helps!
I found on APS-C cameras that ISO 800 is usually a good place to 'stop'*. On full-frame cameras I've pushed to ISO 3200 for colour without too much negative impact, or ISO 5000 with B&W.
Lastly, I've found that pushing ISO higher on B&W shots has far fewer negative connotations than high-ISO colour shots!

The take-home however is keep up the good work!

*I say stop, but really push it up as much as you need to - if there's an opportunity for a one-off shot, in gloomy conditions, and ISO 1600/3200/6400 is all that will suffice for you to get a good shutter speed go for it! Getting that shot is more important than a bit of noise.

Nice one! I agree with @Benz3ne above - with the K100D you can easily use iso400 or even iso800 to bump up your shutter speed. Especially true for black & white. Keep up the good work

Thank you! Definitely not taken offence as you know how new I am, and am very accepting of positive help. Funnily enough I wacked my ISO up to 3200 (max for my K100D) for a sunset picture earlier - using the manual long 80-210mm lens I have been trying to use. Lots of noise but it got the picture.
Also had a lovely close up of an orchid bud by diffusing the flash With super fast shutter speed. so am playing around. Have changed settings as you suggest - I have a habit of walking the garden (even when it's muddy like it is just now) first thing in the morning (not super early just when I get up). It kept me sane in lockdown.

Will have a play with B&W more, thanks again.

I'm not normally sold on faded-sepia type shots but this one sings out to me. I did also do an edit in B&W but I think this finds just a little more favour for me.
