Looking down and up an ephemeral stream where we walk. Mid-late summer this is almost always reduced to a few pools with hardly any detectable flow

That's a great spot.

Calm water being stirred up by humans. The wake created by an inflatable without a keel looks different from one made by a boat with a traditional hull.
