Super-Takumar 50 f1.4... just got this lens and the focus ring is way too tight, anybody know of any adjustments that can be made. This has been on a Spotmatic for probably over 30 years without being used. Optics and Body in pristine shape.

@ f1.4

Looks really good to my old eyes. I hear only good things from this lens and it seems confirmed by your pics. Anything peculiar with this lens when plugging it onto the PK mount ? This is AIS right ?

You could get good quality naphta (a.k.a. zipper fluid) and carefully drop a few drops onto the lens barrel so that it'll flow into the threads but not so much that it'll enter the inner housing. Then, turn carefully back and forth til the naphta has dissolved (which it does quite swiftly). Then, repeat.

Warning, this is sort of a raw force method and under very bad circumstances can leave you with residues of some sort in the inner housing, be it the blades or the glass surfaces. You would then have to take the lens apart to clean it, which you would have to do anyway if you would righten the stiff helical in the conventional way. This does include taking the helical apart, getting all the stiff grease out and putting fresh one in (very scarcely). After that you wonder how to get it together again with the correct infinity mark. The classical CLA :-)

You really wouldn't want to use that stuff on zippers. I'm sure you mean lighter fluid. (naphtha)

ZIPPO...

Thanks, I'm going to give it a try. This lens takes beautiful images but way way too stiff to focus properly. I also found this LINK about disassembling the Tak 50 1.4, I hope the lighter fluid helps, I don't really want to get into taking the lens apart because putting it back together right is 5 times as hard

(Sorry georgweb -- I was scrolling too fast and I missed the first part of your post :ugh: Good catch, theunartist, thanks! Good luck with the Tak. I want one of those!)

Yes, it's the AIS. Only issue is that you have to be careful that you don't bump it, because it doesn't lock on. I put it on with the "rabbit ears" on the lens (what is that thing anyway?) at about 2 o'clock on the body, then a slight turn clockwise. Once though when I dropped my bag a short distance with the camera in it, the lens came off in the bag.

I need a lot of practice to get used to focusing wide open then stopping down for exposure -- although in Av mode at least I don't have to use the green button, which is nice (in some cases I can focus well enough when stopped down just a little, but beyond a certain point the AF confirmation stops working)

I also have a Nikkor 35 1.4 AIS (or maybe it's plain AI... not sure :ugh that I want to use, but it has a nasty squeek when I focus, and for some reason it's underexposing by at least a stop.

Wow Voytech what a beautiful capture. If anybody knows why the ice is forming straight lines (assuming this is not just following scratches in the glass and I'm sure it isn't) I'd be very interested.

Bruce/
pentup, lighter fluid rather, you got me there .-)

About the Nikons on Pentax, I have had mixed experiences with the flange/collar protruding from the lens back onto the camera body. Some will clearly hinder the lens from sitting on the bayonet and I recently noticed light leaking in on such a setup. Here is a very nice guide from Rick Oleson about the rabbit ears and as well the pre-Ai, Ai, AIS versions. Basically the pre-AI versions don't have the collar and therefore should fit much better.

Light leaking in from the left (slight haze). Micro-Nikkor 55/2.8 ais on K100D, no crop, no pp
