Sigma APO 150-500mm F5-6.3 DG OS HSM

Does anyone have first hand experience with this lens? ie how it compares with the Bigma or its IQ in general?

Even I'm very keen in knowing how this lens compares with the Bigma...I read somewhere that its quality is better than Or at par with Bigma...

common sense should say it should be better because of the less ambitious range. and bonus is also in the lighter weight
throw that into google and check it out "site:forums.dpreview.com sigma 150-500"

That might make sense (less focal range) but from everything I've seen/read it does not perform better then the Bigma. The Bigma is an EX lens which is Sigma's higher end glass, while the 150-500 is the more consumer level lens. Not saying that it is a bad lens but I believe the Bigma is better in terms of IQ.

John

Edit: of course nobody has tried the new version of the Pentax mount HSM version of this lens so it is all speculation until that lens is available

About 5 minutes on ebay shows that the Bigma is far superior.

Just curious as to how the speed of the lenses compare. Where does f/5 kick in at on the Bigma, and so on down the line?

Reviews in Canon land are mixed. Some folks say it's awesome, some folks say it pales compared to the might Bigma.

Not sure about the Bigma, but I'm pretty sure the 150-500 is f/6.3 at 400mm. I considered the 150-500, 120-400, and Canon 100-400. I ended up getting the Canon 100-400 since it's a "known" quantity and I didn't want to be an early adopter.

As for the "EX" designation, Sigma is now only going to "EX"-ify constant aperture lenses, so primes (obviously) and then the newest 70-200/50-150 f/2.8 zooms. From what I've read regarding the build quality (and perhaps image quality), the 150-500/120-400 are more or less on par with the EX lenses (they even come with the silly little lens case like the other EX lenses)

Thanks for the info. Looks like decent reviews and bad reviews. Sigma says there is no scheduled release date for Pentax at this time. A 500mm lens would be nice, but that $4500-6000 price tag is out of my reach.

That 4k price tag is for the Sigma 500 f/4.5 not the "Bigma".. the Bimga is the 50-500 zoom model that goes for around 1k (and can still be bought new for Pentax). What there is no plan for (that I've heard of) is redesigning the 50-500 to include SDM/HSM for the Pentax mount. Hope that helps
