Danger Will Robinson - Newbie Approaching

Well, what to say?

I haven't spent much time browsing around, so I don't know how many old farts hang around here, but another one just set up camp. I'm a 54 year old shutterbug, been at it most of my life, managing to become a pretty decent photographer along the way without mucking about with all those tedious details like f-stops and apertures and depth of field calculations...I did learn to use a light meter and a bit about developing at around age 8 though, and have used just about everything from a Kodak Brownie to several SLR Pentax and Minolta rigs.

Along the way I've been able to take quite a few nice shots, and discovered that I happen to be one of those folks who has an eye for it,
currently using a point n shoot Samsung 7.2 MP POS while waiting on my freshly ordered Pentax K-x to get here. I think UPS is using a horse and buggy to deliver it...

So I'm not exactly a newbie to camersa, nor forums. I was moderator for a PC tech support forum for around 8 years, still am actually but I'm semi-retired from there these days. I check in once or twice a year, just got burned out after 8 years of daily tech support questions.

You'll also find a tendency to have a warped sense of humor, I have little control over it, from time to time someting substantially twisted just jumps out...consoder the source and press on...Oh, and I stay away from religious and political discussions, they always turn into rants and ruffle feathers.

I have a number of nice shots posted on Flickr, I'll wait till I'm sure the link will be allowed before posting it, all taken with my Samsung so far, and will be soon entering the world of professional photography, a friend at home (I'm out of state for the moment) wants me to join forces and do some pro work with him, so it looks like I'll be getting into yet another carreer field soon. Let's see - machinist, carpenter, small engine mechanic, optical instrument repair, computer technician...I'm wondering when my head will explode...or maybe implode...

Anyway, I'll be lurking quite a bit looking up info on the soon - I hope - to arrive K-x, so I guess there's no better time than now to say...

HOWDY

HOWDY, YOU OLD FART!!! (I'm 53, so you're ANCIENT compared to me.)

And your self-bio pretty much sums myself up as well:

A very sick sense of humor...which mortal man is usually incapable of comprehending...and I wind up in trouble.

My thoughts also go out to you and yours during this tragedy. Hasn't really hit me yet on the southern east coast of Florida, but I know it's going to.

Big time.

Also, it's better if your head implodes, because it's a lot less messy for those around you who have to clean it all up.

Thanks Ira. Fortunately, I'm in the very northernmost part of the state, close to both arkansas and Mississippi. So I'm not getting hit too hard by it right now, but do expect it to affect the entire state's economy further on up the road.

The K-x came in today, took it out for a test drive a few minutes later, got about a dozen nice shots out of almost 100 tries. Pretty typical actually, I used to burn up 3 rolls of 35mm for 2 nice shots... 4 are uploading to flickr right now, I'll be trying to figure out where to post them in a few minutes.

Yeah my sense of humor gets me in trouble quite often, and blank stares on a daily basis...But I'm not concerned, they're the weird ones...

When you have an image uploaded to Flickr, open the image to full size. Then right click and select "Copy Image Address."

Then, for your posts here, type

The image will appear in your post.

Keep them around 10 inches wide at 72dpi maximum size.

Found out last night how to post smaller images with a link to the larger ones, been using it ever since. Thanks for the tip, but I already got there.

Hello & welcome in Pete! Great intro.

I look forward seeing some posted shots and, most importantly, a deranged sense of humour! Ira can only be one man.

Taff - I've already posted a few in the "Post Your Photos" section, and a couple here and there in contests and themes. I guess I can post one or two here, but figured it wasn't appropriate.

Hi there.

Welcome to the forum!! It is a lot of fun here. I look forward to reading your posts. I am not quite an old fart yet, but certainly getting there (who isn't?) at 43, about to be 44 in about 21 days. As for a sense of humor, I have been told that I have none, so give me some!!

I don't remember too much about Will and his personality, I was a kid too, but I do remember the robot and his much repeated warning, and the good "doctor" who was a complete twit and always trying to sabotage everything. Kind of dumb if you're stranded somewhere in unknown regions of unexplored deep space if you ask me...Oh and I haven't seen the remake...

Anyway thanks guys, I'm enjoying it so far, seem to be a lot of nice folks here and some excellent pictures. I spend more time gawking at great shots than participating in discussions...

But I'm also getting some ideas for pictures, and having a great time learning my new K-x. I'm up to 850 shots or so in less than a week...including a couple of hundred that got deleted either immediately or after transferring to computer...I shot over 200 yesterday, an outing to a national park and a road trip to a casino where my sister worked a couple of years ago, doing the wiring on a new section. Got a couple of nice night shots, a few goode nature/macro shots and some good black and white, even tried a few out the window of the truck at 70mph...

I'm still going through them sorting out the good the bad and the ugly...

I too watched it as a kid but it's through adult eyes I'm seeing it in rerun now (was in rerun then too). When the 'good' doctor needs a patsy, he can always count on the boob, Will Robinson.

Unless you are prepared to stab your eyes out with a fork, don't waste the time, money, or effort for rental on the movie.

First, Dr. Smith was a pedophile.

Second, they say if you watch it today, you would be amazed how crappy the props were. They had no budget and would literally use ANYTHING laying around the studio closets.

Like, they would make an alien out of a vacuum cleaner and a mop.
