Welcome to the forum.
Starting off on your journey, I'd suggest looking for a second hand camera, like the Pentax K10D, which goes for around US$300, and a few manual focus lenses like the Takumars, varous M42 or Pentax M or A series lenses.

Learning with prime (fixed-focal length) lenses is best so you learn composition and zooming with your feet, so a variety of 28, 50 and 135mm lenses would get you going, then perhaps looking for a macro lens if you're that way inclined. These can be had for under $200 if you look in the right places - this forum's marketplace is great for that.

All the best in that.

United States?

If so, a new K-x with 18-55 is $529 from B&H door to door.

You should be able to find a lot of old bodies. I'm not a fan of kit lenses but I'd recommend some brand of 18-55 to start. It sounds nice to zoom with your feet but in reality that can be a hundred feet or more of scurrying back and forth, depending on the subject. The flexibility of a zoom will allow you to match the angle of the lens to what you see with your eye. Auto focus makes things much simpler and for the vast majority of shots is fine. The regular kit lens (not DAL version) has the quick-shift manual focus ring if needed for a critical focus.

I see there is a K20D and 18-55 plus 50-200 and bag in the marketplace. It is a little over your budget but it would be a great starter set, and in this hobby, everything will go over budget :-)

This.
If this is too much for you, grab a K-m. Great beginner DSLR with more than decent abilities. And those ones are cheap. Get a 17-70 (Sigma or Pentax) if you can afford them and you'll have a nice all-rounder setup.

Welcome to the forum, remember once you've got your body sorted out, there are many great deals to be had on older Pentax glass.
