Hola from BCN

Hi all!

I'm a new forum member. Picked up a K-x kit before leaving the states for a 2-year job assignment here in Barcelona, as I knew I'd have lots of great subjects to shoot, and many memories to preserve. I'm totally in love with the camera, and now I'm looking to expand my lens collection with a fast prime or two. I'm considering the FA 50mm and 35mm, but am also extremely tempted by the 10-20mm range. A bit wary of Sigma, but considering it. Any advice you have would be much appreciated!

All best,

Sam

Welcome Sam.
The Sigma 10-20 (old version) has been given many positive accolades in this forum alone, some praising its image quality, getting towards that of premium ultrawides like the Pentax DA 12-24. It comes down to how much you want to spend on an ultrawide - if the budget limits you to a 10-20, you should just go for it. However if you could save up for a 12-24 reasonably soon, that one would be the way to go, since it is the one which shines in its results when it really matters.

All the best in your decision.

Welcome to the forum, two years in Barcelona, you'll need another camera body when you leave, your K-x should be worn out with all the photographic opportunities that will present themselves there.

Thanks for the replies, guys! I think I'm going to go for a FA50mm 1.4 and then save up for either the Sigma 20mm or the DA21mm to get the wider range. I like the kit lens just fine but really want the speed and creativity-inducing constraints of a prime. These should help.

Still very tempted by the 12-24, though.

Cheers!

Bienvenidos a la fiesta, hermano!

Yeah, you want that fast 50 prime, but when you're ready to spend and go wide, I think you're going to find a fixed 20 or 21 constraining compared to the 10-20 or 12-24, which offers you so much wider.

I need something on the ultra-wide side--well, I don't really need it but I want it--and I'm going through this same debate in my head, and I'm leaning toward the 10-20. However, if I decide to go prime, it will be the 15 Limited:

It's not a lens. It's a magical portal to a mystical land of happiness and enchantment.
