New to site, so I thought I'd introduce myself.

Hi, I got a k-x at the start of December as the first DSLR I've owned, and I love it. I've borrowed D-40s from work a few times and enjoyed the possibilities over my compact, but never really got on with the layout of the camera, nor did I like the clumsy sit in my small hands. Not to say I think it's a bad camera, I don't at all, but it's not for me. Within a week or two of getting my k-x I found a retired pro's kit on ebay for 140 quid with an ME body and five lenses, including the 24 and 50mm smc lenses I was particularly after. I gave the film body and a couple of lenses to my ex, and got to work on the primes. I almost never attach the kit lens now, I prefer the speed and control of manual, not to mention the better colours and increase in stops.

I take at least a few shots each day of the same subjects, experimenting with different lighting conditions and camera settings, and a couple of times a week I go out to take shots for the two learning projects I've set myself. One of these is night shots of the streets and buildings around Plymouth, the other, which means more to me, is to photograph the abandoned and rotting fishing boats around the city. I find they have a lot of pathos - all of those traditions and jobs gone and forgotten.

My next task is to get a better hang on portraiture, the zoom flash that came with the ebay kit has opened up the possibilities available for me, and then in the summer I'll give landscapes a bit more of a go.

All in all, I'm very glad I spent a couple of weeks on and similar sites and didn't just go for a Canon or a Nikon; quite a few of my friends have various models from both of these manufacturers and they don't have the features or low light capabilities of my entry level Pentax.

Anyway, that's a little about my kit and what I'm teaching myself to do with it, I'm looking forward to reading the guides on this site to help my learning process along and to getting to know the other members.

Thanks for the welcome. I know it's a serious addiction, I'd bought a lens before I even had the camera... Still, getting five in one go covering 24 - 500mm should keep me going a while, though now you come to mention it, a good macro could be necessary... Joking aside, I'm mostly using the 24mm at the moment until I have a good feel for what I can do with it, walking before running and all that. One of the main reasons I got the k-x is the availability of older lenses, I got a 50 - 200 and a 2x teleconverter from a charity shop for £5 the other day. The lens is full of fungus so I'll use that to learn how to strip and clean a lens. If I mess it up, I'll have learnt how not to do it, and only wasted a few quid. I actually prefer manual lenses, if I just wanted a nice camera that does everything apart from composition for me I'd have got a NEX, which are a fantastic cameras.
