Hey there

So, might as well get the intro thread out of the way. I'll try to keep it short...

Back in the mid-90's I was taking a photography class in high school. I didn't have a camera so my uncle let me borrow his SLR. It was this Pentax SF-1:

(click for big)

I enjoyed the class; but being the typical moron teenager I was more interested in videogames and smoking weed with my friends than pursuing my interest in photography. I gave the camera back to my uncle and never shot an SLR again, until...

Flash forward to two years ago, I'm working in quality control and part of the job involves taking photos of defects. My supervisor hated the crappy pics I was taking with my cellphone, so one day he hands me a Canon 20D and said "here, take this one, the company bought a 7D and we don't need it anymore".

I started using it for taking the photos of defects, and that rekindled my interest in photography. I started going around town shooting with it, read a couple books to get myself back up to speed. Before I knew it I found myself with a Canon 1DS II and other goodies, shooting and having fun.

Well, that uncle who had loaned me the SF-1 passed away in the late-90's. My dad inherited most of his stuff, including his cameras and equipment. My dad tucked it away in the closet where it remained until a few weeks ago. He came over one weekend with a camera bag full of stuff and said "these aren't getting used and you're into cameras now so maybe you can use them".

The camera bag contained the SF-1, an A-3000, and 3 lenses, the best of which a 50-A 1.7. I had been considering getting back into film, so I immediately put a fresh battery in the SF-1 and turned it on. It just went "WRRRR...WRRRR...WRRRR" until I yanked the battery. After talking with various camera repair people, I found out this model camera has a plastic gear on the motor shaft, and over time the plastic gets brittle and cracks. Camera is dead. I also checked out the A-3000, but the AA batteries in it had blown up long ago and gunked up everything pretty bad. From the reviews I've read it doesn't seem to be a very good camera anyway, and I'd prefer to use manual mode.

But I still had those lenses. Determined to put them to some use, I checked out the local Craigslist and found a ME Super in pretty much mint condition. Got it for very cheap and it's working perfectly. I gotta say I love this camera. The viewfinder is seems just as large as the one in my 1DS. I really like the microprisms and the split recticle, it makes focusing manually very easy. The shutter makes a pleasant *thwap* sound that I never get tired of hearing. And it's so small I can pretty much take it with me anywhere, unlike the 1DS which is frickin' gigantic.

My plan now is to use the ME Super as a small incognito SLR to shoot film with. Eventually I plan on setting up a "bathroom darkroom" and developing/printing the film myself. But that's gonna have to wait until I have the funds. In the meantime I'll just run some rolls through it and have some fun.

Glad to join the forums; there's tons of great info here and I based my decision to buy the Super off of some things I had read in the reviews and the forums.
