Helsinki says hi

Hello everyone. I got my K-x last year and I have been thoroughly satisfied with it. It is my first DSLR (before it I had the Optio S and the Optio A30) but I cannot imagine ever really needing features that it does not have (perhaps apart from a bigger sensor eventually, but that can wait).

More or less the only thing that bothers me with Pentax is the fact that I do not like investing in APS-C lenses, and apart from a few (mostly expensive) FA and DFA lenses, it is all APS-C. It would not be such a big problem if Pentax lenses did not cost a lot more here in Finland compared to many other places. But on the other hand, I have quite a few old manual lenses, and somehow I find getting a good result with a manual lens more rewarding than with auto everything.

Welcome! Why do you not like investing in APS-C lenses? Planning on moving to FF in the future? Be sure to explore this website as there are many nooks and crannies all over. Enjoy!

Hi KxBlaze and thanks for the welcome!

Yeah, eventually (years from now of course) I believe I will be using an FF camera. I also believe Pentax will be moving to FF when they finally think the sensor prices are right. In the end just about the only permanent advantage that APS-C has over FF is size, and with the K mount, I believe there are significant limitations to how small the camera can be. The fact is that the K mount was designed for 35mm film, and if Pentax want to stick with it, in the end they will be producing full frame cameras too. After this, they will continue to make APS-C cameras too at least for a while, but I am not convinced APS-C will stay around for too long.

Sure, APS-C means the lenses are smaller and lighter too. But I believe that is really only an advantage for a small group of people. For someone who uses a small normal zoom or primes of a relatively normal focal length the difference is negligible. If you really care about having the smallest, lightest camera, you will be using something else anyway.

Hello from Mikkeli

Timo, just relax. APS-C has more advantages than just size. Surely FF has advantages too, but APS-C is good and can be even exellent. It is up to you. You can get good and crisp pictures with both of them and bad pictures too

For me, buying(or not to) DA lenses or others is matter of thicness of my wallet...I think you can be happy with them too(limiteds), and luckilly there are FA's and other brands you can buy looking for FF too, but I think that time will not come soon, and they cost even more. Besides I enjoy that extra reach crop sensor gives me...
