I've had a K-x twin lens kit, from new, for nearly a year and I have struggled for that time to get pictures sharply in focus. I am 63 and at first blamed myself but I have tried using a Sony a 390 and had no problems. I have tried every combination I can think of but normally I use spot focus and metering. I did have a UV filter on the lens to protect the lens and removing it improved things a lot. I still enjoy using the camera but I now never expect things to be crisp. The only time when the picture is really sharp is when I use flash and then it is outstanding. Only any good for taking the dog really but his whiskers and nose are so clear but there are only so many doggy snaps you feel you want to take puppy or not.

Welcome to the forum, glad to have you with us. Why don't you post your problem with focus in the Pentax Beginners Corner and you may find someone has a solution to the problem.
