Greetings from New England

I've decided to use the lenses I had with my Pentax ZX-5 and thus will be ordering a K-r with 18-55 mm lens. I will try it out for a month and decide whether to stay with Pentax or go the Canon / Nikon route. I hope to learn a lot in the next few weeks.

Greetings and welcome! The 18-55 is quite respectable for a kit lens, but is still a kit lens. So it's great you have other Pentax glass to try with it.

I haven't bought the camera yet, so if there's a better lens option for trying out the K-R, I am all ears..

If you want something in the standard zoom range, used Pentax DA 16-45 f/4 AL lenses are going for USD 220 - 250 on the gear forum. I've just ordered one myself. A favorite source of lens reviews is the Photozone Pentax listing, and of course there are user reviews here on pentaxforums.com.

Edit: But what about your current Pentax lens lineup?

From my Pentax ZX-30 I have

1. Pentax-FA 28-80 kit lens (say "SMC Pentax -FA 1:3.5-5.6 28-80mm)

2. Tamron AF 70-300 mm Tele-Macro

I had considered just getting the body to see if I like the camera, but the kit 18-55 lens is only $35 more.

I really would love to have an articulating LCD, but to get one and to have a 70-300 mm capability is soooo much more expensive than just trying out a K-R and using the 70-300 I have.

The kit lens is well worth $35. Check out the kit lens club for some examples.
