Greetings. I am new to Pentax k-r as well as this forum. I have had several SLR cameras over the years but never a digital SLR. If I can ask an immediate question, how important is it to download the various updates I saw posted on the Pentax site when I loaded the CD that came with the kit? Thank you. I look forward to reading the posts. MW

Welcome! Are you talking about camera firmware updates, or software updates? The former is generally important, but the latter not so much.

Thank you for you reply, Adam. -- There are both. The firmware seems to apply to GPS and another to support SDXC memory cards. -- I'm using a 8 gig SD card. Does that matter? -- This is all new to me. -- By the way, I might be going to Europe soon. I assume I'll need a power converter for the battery charger. Will a standard coverter be OK? -- I appreciate the help. -- Michael

Firmware updates should be applied as they include not only upgrades but bug fixes if any. The battery charger should be OK with a simple plug adapter. For example, the back of my charger tells me that it will accept anything from 100-240 volts and 50-60 Hz.
