Hello from Northern Illinois

Just ordered the K-5 body only. This is my first DSLR. Would the SMC Pentax DA* 16-50mm be a good starter lens-better than the kit lens? Any suggestions for a first time serious enthusiast? Thanks for the great forum!

I'm also in the northern Illinois area.

Do you prefer zoom or prime lenses? I'm sure the DA* 16-50 would be a good lens for you, but there are a few cheaper options like the DA 16-45 f4 or maybe even the Tamron 28-75mm f2.8 if you don't need a super wide angle lens.

Welcome and congrats on the K-5! As sjwaldron says, depends on what you like and what you'll be shooting. While 16mm isn't super wide on a crop sensor, it's still pretty wide and might be wider than you need, whereas you might like more reach than 50mm. Certainly the DA* 16-50 or even the DA 16-45 would be a step up in optical quality from the kit lens, but the kit lens is actually very good, and comes in a weather-sealed version (which the DA* is also, but not the 16-45). The DA* is about twice the weight of the kit lens, also something to consider for a walk-around lens. I don't think you can go wrong with any of these choices, if that is the zoom range you want.

Thanks. Such a decision to make since I am new to photography. I like the idea of shooting candids but with the versatility to shoot medium telephoto shots and even a nice wide shot. That Tamron lens looks good. I did not buy the kit lens with the K-5.

Welcome to a fellow Northern Illinoisan!
I have the 16-45 and it's pretty good but I'm thinking of moving to the 18-135. That 16-50* is very highly regarded, if it's in your budget.
