Depends on your budget, preferred style of working (e.g., handheld vs. tripod), typical subjects (e.g. large waterbirds or small perching birds? Birds in flight?) and how close you expect to get to them.

For current production lenses I'd say the Sigma 500 f/4.5 looks like a good choice for birding, but it's very expensive. Having just got started with birding myself, my wish list includes one of the out-of-production long Pentax lenses, especially the FA* 250-600. But talk about hard to find, and expensive ...

The "Bigma" (Sigma 50-500) is well regarded as a relatively inexpensive way to "go long".

The 55-300 is a very versatile lens, I shoot birds too, and while I'd like longer reach the cropping abilty of the images helps a lot. I'd like to try a teleconverter to get more reach without the big expense of a longer lens. The K5 sensor can handle the lower light of a converter combo.

Hi, Many thanks you for the suggestions.
Have tried the 55-300 on small birds up trees. Not very sharp - Maybe my technique not good enough or I need a faster 300 prime lens.

The Sigma 150-500 is cheaper than pentax DA*300 or older version FA* or F*300 prime lens + a TC.

Wanted to buy a teleconverter to test out but seems like very difficult to find. The Pentax 1.7X TC in ebay seems very expensive.
