From Texas, Hi Y'all

Iam still trying to get my feet wet in the DSLR realm. I had a Canon D50 but I was terribly dissatisfied with the quality of all the soft focus pictures so I sold it and bought the Pentax K-r. Most of my photos are of my Grand-kids and family activities. I am hoping to be able to garner some valuable tips on how to improve my abilities. I am looking forward to a wonderful relationship with everyone here, and would love to hear from other Texans on the forum.

Welcome to the forum. If you were using the Canon kit lens that came with the d50 then the K-r lens should be a noticeable improvement. If you really want to get sharp then there are better lenses (both Primes and Zooms) in the Pentax world (at much more reasonable prices than the L lenses from Canon)
Lot's of people to provide good advice here for you

Welcome LL - this is a great place to learn about all things Pentax, and photography, too. Like Eddie said, lots of good advice here - there are quite a few pros & experienced folks here willing to share their knowledge. Enjoy your new K-r!

Welcome! Whereabouts in Texas are you from? I spent a year there oh gosh, 10 years ago, down out west from Houston and loved it. Tons of advice here and everyone's super friendly.

Hi Y'all

Thank you for the warm welcome, I live in Palestine, TX, known as the Piney Woods. I moved here 3 years ago after a 17 year stint on the gulf. What a difference 250 miles can make. I think I have found a wonderful place for both learning and critique.

Hi LazyLonghorn,

Ah, East Texas. I stayed with some people there as well, but I'd have to dig into my diaries to remember where exactly. The geography there is totally different to the coast and the flat landscape that I was used to out west of Houston. Not to mention a helluva lot cooler and less humidity!

I lived for years in the West Texas dessert and we did not have highs as what we had this summer in East Texas

It was the Summer From Hell, that's for sure. I've lived here in N. Texas for 20 yrs and have never seen this kind of heat before (and lack of rainfall). I would wait until about 9pm to take the dogs walking, after it had "cooled down" to only 100F or so From what I've heard, we're in for another scorcher next year, too.
