Hello from China

Hi,

I am so interested in this professional website. I bought K-x(with 18-55mm F/3.5-5.6) in 2010. But I am still a newer. I like to take photo for my daughters. Now I am selecting a portrait lens. But I am considering which one is better between DA 70mm/F2.4 with FA 50mm/F1.4 or Sigma 50mm/F1.4. Please give me some suggestion. Thanks.

Hi, and welcome! I don't have experience with any of those lenses, but even so there are some obvious differences: the 70 is especially compact and light, while the Sigma is especially large and heavy for a 50 1.4. Reviewers on this site seem to really like the Sigma; the well-respected Photozone.de gives it mixed marks (he doesn't review it on a Pentax, but does on other APS-C and full frame bodies). There's also the DA* 55. Or if you don't require autofocus there's a whole host of older Pentax 50 1.4 lenses to consider.

Welcome to the forums! I recommend the FA50/1.4. It is fast, agile, reliable, and cost-effective, and its focal length is perfect for full-body to head-and-shoulders portraits. It can also be operated both automatically and manually, which is good for practice. Knowing how to use a lens manually can lead you later to superb inexpensive used manual lenses.

It's a long way from the USA to China (postage) and you can easily buy them here. Also there is a fixed import duty in China for the importation of lenses (I've been caught out on this one and now have my lenses I buy from overseas sent to a friend in HK) : US$ 200 per lens (irrespective of how much you paid for it) collected by the post office so you can't 'negotiate' it down !!!
