Hello :)

Hi! I'm Jessica and a new Pentax user.
Frankly I had a hard time choosing my first DSLR camera, as it's going to be my first, my birthday gift, and I had high hope that I could use it for a very long time. I also thought about buying the Olympus PEN since it looks promising.
But after some researches, my choice went to Pentax k-r, especially after I tried and tested it beforehand, and I can choose the color! Exciting, right?
Then, after reading the focus thingy about k-r, well I must say that is certainly not a good news... Moreover, about the discontinuation...wow, to think that I just bought it today...

Well, I still have a high hope for k-r performance. Hope it won't disappoint me.

Cheers!

Welcome Jessica, and congratulations on your k-r! Don't worry about it being an orphan, it will use all the Pentax K mount lenses ever made, (and hopefully those to be made in the foreseeable future!) This is a great forum with so many knowledgeable people willing to share their expertise. I hope you enjoy it as much as I have.

Don't be afraid, you made a great purchase and welcome to this nice community.

A good friend of mine and semi-professional photographer has an amazing collection of cameras, including expensive Leica, Nikon D700 full frame, Olympus etc. And he too, couldn't resist to buy a red K-x just now - esp. at its current price point. And he's amazed by it. It's normal when entering a specialized forum to be overwhelmed by problems of a product. That's the case even in a German car forum and still you (probably) won't find any better.

I dont own a K-r, so I an only speculate, but my understanding is that most everyone whom owns them is happy with them. They just focus a little strangely under tungsten light. Specifically, it tends to focus in front of the subject. From what I've seen it's only an issue shooting with super fast glass, (such as a FA 50/1.4) under specific lighting conditions.

Any camera you buy is going to have some issue that a group of people will be unhappy about. As far as issues go, I'm not sure you'll even notice this one

Welcome to the forums!.

Plus 1 to all the advice above, forums are a good place to find out everything made is horrible and has many many problems. it's a warped view of the world for sure.
no need to worry, enjoy the camera and learn to use it, it won't disappoint you.

As a newbie to DSLR you may want to track down a copy of this at the library

Understanding Exposure, 3rd Edition: How to Shoot Great Photographs with Any Camera: Amazon.ca: Bryan Peterson: Books

A lot of the issues new users come across with the move to more sophisticated cameras like DSLRs can be avoided by reading this one. I recommend it to a lot of new users

Hi,
I'm an old newbie to Pentax. I owned a Spotmatic in 1970 which was stolen a few years later. Have had other cameras since but never another Pentax until this week when I gota Spotmatic II and a 50/1.4 SMC on the auction site. Dropped them off locally for a cla yesterday. Can't wait get them back. Am likely to get a SMC 35 and 105 in the near future.
Best regards to all!

Thank you! Yes, I think I made the right decision by purchasing my k-r.
I can say now after I used it for several days, that I'm a proud owner of Pentax already

I can say now that I'm also one of that happy Pentax owner.
Yup, got issue with the focus too, but mine is when I shot in macro mode, it's hard to focus when I was too close to the object.
