Hello from New Mexico

Hi all. I'm new to Pentax forums. I have been shooting with a Pentax *ist D since it was new in 2004. I have always use fully Auto and was pleased. Last year I retired and decided it was time to learn how to use the equipment I have, now that I have time. I'm looking forward to picking a lot of your brains in the future.
Thanks, Bill

Thanks, Pete.
It's a lot of fun with a steep but fun learning curve.

I saw an *ist D a year or so ago in the ABQ botanic garden. Was that you? That's the only other Pentax I've spotted in the wild (in the US that is).

Hope you enjoy the forum, it's a great place to learn. Have fun and ask lots of questions!

Wasn't me. You're right there aren't many of us around. Even fewer *ist D's. I'm enjoying myself so far. This is a great forum, especially for us Pentax folk!

Hi Bill,

good idea to leave "full Auto" behind.

AFAIC, the "Av" and "Tv" modes do not count as "Auto" (semi-Auto, perhaps). Don't feel you have to use "M" to use your camera to its full potential. "M" mode has its place (in particular with flash photography) but most of the time "Av" and "Tv" allow you to make all artistic decisions while exploiting the convenience of a built-in lightmeter. Nothing wrong with the latter, AFAIC.
