By way of introduction, I bought myself a Pentax K-x for a retirement hobby and have recently returned from a trip to the UK and Africa. Once I familiarise myself with this forum I hope to pick the brains of those people who actually know anything about photography (which I don't) and glean any tips and hints to help me improve what I'm doing. I have a particular interest in wildlife photography. My youngest son recently bought me the book 'Digital phtography for dummies' which just about sums up my ability. Cheers.

Welcome aboard. My first dSLR was the K-x too. I hadn't shot anything but P&S cameras in more years than I care to recall before getting the K-x about 2 years ago. Once you've plumbed the depths of the current book I'd recommend Bryan Peterson's books. They have videos to accompany them and there are a bunch of them on YouTube that you can watch to see how its done (often MUCH more informative than reading about it).

Lost photos - not deleted

Thanks Docrwm.

I've experienced a few problems with my K-x and was wondering if anyone else has had similar problems.
From day 1 when turning the camera on after it has been turned off the first photo is nearly always blank. I thought I could live with this and just delete the first blank photo as I have it set on rapid shooting and thought that it might be somehow connected with the rapid shooting mode. Initially I used a 4GB Lexar SDHC card and had no other problems. More recently though I purchased an 8GB card and started intermitantly getting photos that I couldn't view (the image cannot be displayed message) either on the LCD or on the computer so I took the card back and it was replaced with a new one. However the same problem started happening. As both of these cards were rated at 4 I was told that maybe I needed to use a card with a higher rating. Consequently I bought a 16GB card but with a 10 rating this time. The same problem as before but not only that I have been losing images. After shooting, the images can be reviewed on the LCD screen for up to a few hours but at a later time they have disappeared from view. This has happened with both 8GB and 16GB cards but not the 4GB cards for some reason. The general consensus seems to be that it is more likely to be a problem with the cards but I wouldn't expect three separate cards to be consistently at fault. I now have four 4GB cards and none have displayed this same abberation. I returned the camera to where I bought it and sure enough the same problem as I have mentioned (first blank then the images disappear by the next day) happened in the shop so it is being sent back for assessment. Fortunately the camera is still under warranty but I was wondering if anyone else had encountered similar problems.

I have talken the memory cards to a photographic technician and the lost images can be viewed BUT ONLY AS THUMBNAILS. Once you try to open the image full screen the photo is greyed out - there might be one or two lines of colour at the top of the photo but that's all.

Can anyone explain what might be happening either in terms of losing the images or of why the lost images can only be seen as thumbnails? I've had suggestions that it might be a problem of lowered battery power - the K-x takes rechargable AA batteries - and the images are not being stored properly but nothing seems to make sense. Any help would be very much appreciated.
