Welcome aboard. This forum and helpful members would be near the top of the list.

Others include backward compatibility with old glass - the K mount has been around a long time - more features for less (e.g., Water resistance at $1k where the same build quality will cost a great deal more in Canon or Nikon), great low light performance, and a contrary nature.

It offers the most bang for your buck. Some would say it makes the best APS-C cameras. Good selection of lenses that rival Canikon's top of the line, often at a fraction of the price.
Also, it offers colourful camera bodies and a yellow boxy mirrorless

Pentax dSLRs have in-body image stabilization (here called SR, Shake Reduction) so ANY lens of ANY type that is mounted on the camera is stabilized. Sony and Olympus have similar stabilization; Canon and Nikon have in-lens stabilization on SOME (usually longer) lenses.

Pentax dSLRs have fairly complete backwards compatibility with a vast array of lenses. Entry-level Nikons are only compatible with some Nikon-mount lenses. More lenses can be adapted to Canon, Sony and Olympus. Canon users keep stealing our older Pentax lenses!

The best Pentax lenses are smaller and cheaper than their Canon, Nikon, and Sony equivalents. These can't be compared directly to Olympus because Olympus uses smaller sensors with less resolution. Canon and Nikon make cheaper entry-level lenses; Pentax is moving into that area.

Many people hate the Canon menu system, and account the Pentax menu system as being well-nigh perfect, and the user interface as a whole is better than Nikon. I find Pentax menus superior to Sony and Olympus compact cameras, but I can't compare to their dSLRs.

The current top-of-the-line Pentax APS-C dSLR, the K5, has been rated EXTREMELY HIGHLY by various technical reviewers, and for a lower price than its nearest competitors. Pentax bodies really do give the most bang-for-the-buck, although Nikon and Canon are learning.

In larger formats, Nikon and Canon have very good (and very expensive) professional-level full-frame (FF) bodies, with pro support networks. But for studio pro work, the medium-format Pentax 645D is by far the most cost-effective camera; Canikonympus don't even compete there.

Pentax (under previous owners) hasn't pushed their marketing and presence. Under Ricoh ownership, this is changing. Ricoh intends to beat Canon in photography as they have in office technology, so we can expect to see some major innovations (and better marketing) pretty soon.

Also, Pentax owners are nicer people. At least, we haven't just wandered into a big-box store and wandered out with a bargain plastic camera kit. We usually have come to Pentax deliberately, because Pentax meets our needs better. I could have bought anything; I decided on Pentax.

Welcome to the forum, John Nagy. As well as the points in the list above (good job RioRico), the K-5 is a bit smaller, lighter and easier to handle.
