New K100D Owner

Hi everyone!

I picked up my first D-SLR - a K100D with 18-55mm kit lens - on Dec. 14th! I heard about your site recently and decided this would be a great place for me to learn more about my camera.

Although I've been playing with film cameras since I was a kid, my foray into photography really started when I had my first kid 7 years ago. My digital experiences are primarly with a Fuji 2800Z (a 2 MP superzoom P&S) and a Sony HDR-HC1 camcorder (lol, it can do 2.8 MP p&s stills - the 10x zoom comes in handy). Both of my digital cameras boggled me when I got some great 8x10's (and surprisingly, a few good 10x15's) but I realized two years ago I was pushing both of these cameras' abilities both for getting larger prints and getting the shots I wanted to get - so it was time for an upgrade and I started to save.

Why I decided on the Pentax? Top 3 reasons I can think of.

1. Pentax, in my mind, says "CAMERA". (the only other two brands that first come to my mind are Nikon and FujiFilm).
2. LOTS of very well built lenses (used and new) available at to try out and learn - now finding lenses that I can call my own will be fun (eek! am I a new LBA'er too?)
3. The Pentax K100D was like a pair of jeans to me - it just got more fun every time I use it. As I visited the camera shops to try out DSLR's in my price range (D50/D40; XT; a used Fuji S2 - with IQ which simply wowed me when you think of how old it is), I was picking up the Pentax K100/K110D more often and this was my ultimate deciding factor.

I look forward to improving my photo-taking, as well as building a great experience with my Pentax and this forum.

Welcome! I just switched from a DL to a K100, and I'm really enjoying it. You made a good choice!

Thanks, Julie! I almost went for the DL earlier this year, that 2 lens kit rebate in the fall was very tempting. I held off because I wanted the SR. 1000+ .jpg shots later - a lot of them misfires (still learning the quirks of the WB) I'm extremely happy.

welcome and congratulations!

my wife, who still barely knows how to use a P&S, just loves the K100. I could not believe how easy it is to use, my wife even knows how to use the macro setting

cheers

randy
