Newbie Silver Surfer

Hi Everyone.
I'm a complete and utter photographic novice from Lancashire UK with his first SLR a Pentax K-r with two Lens a. 18-55 b. 50-200 so any advice would be really welcome. Doing a lot of reading and practice at the moment but finding it hardwork to absorb everything ie all the various settings and meanings but will persevere until it sinks in, so PLEASE bear with me when I'm asking for help.

Welcome, and you've come to the right place: this site is for everyone from novice to pro. You have the same two-lens kit I started with when I got my first DSLR a few years ago; it will serve you well. Lots of ways to approach your introduction to this marvelous world of photography, but reading and practicing as you are doing is one of the most important things. Also consider joining a local photo club. Enjoy!

Welcome aboard! Photography is both artistic and technical, with an emphasis on techy. Learning the craft and art involves learning the jargon and what it describes. Think of PentaxForums as an ongoing language seminar. And as with any seminar, preparation is the trick. To that end, READ. I won't recommend specific book(s) (tho I'm soft on the old TIME-LIFE LIBRARY OF PHOTOGRAPHY series). Instead, hit your local public library, and read EVERYTHING about photography.

Everything: not just digital techniques, and basic photo concepts like FOV (field of view) and DOF (depth of field) and exposures and lighting; but also the history and evolution of optics, emulsions, practices, and abuses. Learn how manipulation has been around since the start; why "camera fiends" were public enemies in the late 1800s (empowered by Zeiss and Kodak); how Pentax once ruled the camera world; etc. It's all fascinating, and infinite. Have fun!
