Hi All: Just bought the K-5 and currently selling my old Canon 1Ds kit. Sad to see it go, but the this K-5 looks like a lot of fun.

Hi. Welcome to the forum.

Just curious. Why are you doing that?

Getting Rid of lenses too? Pentax lenses are no longer a bargain, you know?

Hi RFR, and welcome to the Forums.

Nice to see another Aussie here, too.

If you're wondering about Fontan's comment on Pentax lenses, the US distributor has forced a price hike there that's created a bit of a flap in some quarters. Australian prices haven't been affected, and they're still well-priced against the opposition here. It'll probably take some time before those concerned realise the sky hasn't fallen yet.

If you have every lugged around a 1Ds with L Series glass you'll know why. Canon is far far more expensive than anything Pentax has to offer and it weighs a ton. The K-5 is tiny in comparison and so are the lenses. My first camera was Spotmatic F and I loved the M42 lenses. Keen to use them again and some of the old Russian and CZJ lenses too.

Very true, and equally true of Nikon, which I still shoot. But these days you'll find that a difficult point to get across around here. :P Enjoy your K-5, it's a killer camera.

Welcome, and plus 1 to Todd and Rob's comments. Recent price policy changes in the US have a lot of people bordering on hysterics. I've shot cCanon and Nikon but somehow always ended up back at Pentax. The brand still represents some excellent value (and certainly is a lot easier to carry about day to day than the big Canon and Nikon kits - which still have their advantages as well.
I think many forget the camera is just a tool that allows you to achieve a goal. some tools are better for some goals.
Enjoy the K5 and the old lenses (I shoot a lot of old lenses myself it's one of the draws for me)

Thanks All. Great to be a part of such a friendly forum/network. For those of you who use the old M42 screw lenses which of all the lenes available is your favorite? You can only suggest one.

Welcome RFR,
It is very difficult to pick a favorite among the M42s but then if you force me I would say the Super Tak 85 1.9. It is one beautiful portrait lens.

I only have a few m42 lenses but I have to say the 55 1.8 super tak is probably my overall favourite because of the way it renders (My 50 1.4 is a close second)

I've only used the 50/1.4 Super Tak, and only briefly. I was impressed...very nice lens, but my preferred focal lengths tend away from normal in both directions these days. So, with no real experience, and based only on reading and looking at some images, I've had my eye on the 85/1.8. It's good to hear a strong endorsement of the 1.9, though.....if I recall (correct me if I'm wrong) it's a fair bit less expensive than the 1.8?

I agree that the 55 is a stellar lens. It has such a punch and contrast to the images. On APSC a great FOV for portraits.

Todd, first of all, kudos to you for starting a great thread on keeping one's priorities right on this photo forum. It was well written and would probably get some of us on track with our interests in actually taking pictures.

About the takumars - I am not surprised that the 50 you played with was impressive. I have the SMC version which is great. Yes, the 85 1.9s are definitely cheaper than the 1.8. I have never tried the 1.8 yet.

There is one on the bay with 2 more days left Near Mint PENTAX TAKUMAR 85mm Threaded Lens 1:1.8/85 ASAHI Lens 4847125 Japan!!! | eBay

(I have no ties to the seller)

Exactly. It has the appeal to me of a nice fastish 85 or the FA77 on FF/Film

Welcome to the Pentax world.

I was a confirmed Canoneer for almost 40 years. I still consider my T90 one of the best cameras ever made.

But when I wanted to switch to digital Canon priced itself out of the market. (Are you listening Pentax?)

However, my K-5 is all I want or need.
