I never know if some of the cheaper lenses will yield decent results. sometimes with film its the character that makes the magic. perhaps some of these lenses can provide that. Opinions?

I've learned hanging here there is no lens that is such a turkey that someone can't get a killer shot with it!
You can check the lens clubs and lens reviews here to see what people are achieving.
Many here seek lens with 'character'.

Welcome to the forum, johnfer. I have some really good shots with the little 18-55, and some bad ones with my old 50/1.4, but also the other way around. I agree with riff re reading the reviews.
